ChatGPT ads, set up to report leads, not clicks.

ChatGPT ads reached UK advertisers in June 2026. Most accounts are being opened with the tracking left for later. We do it the other way round: measurement first, then a fixed test, then a straight answer on whether the channel earns more budget.

ChatGPT advertising is a new paid channel with old problems. The clicks are cheap to buy and easy to report. Whether they turn into enquiries, sales or applications depends on tracking and on how well the ad matches the question being asked, and that is the part we build.

How ChatGPT ads work

An ad in ChatGPT sits below an answer, labelled as sponsored and visually separate from it. OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers: they run on separate systems and an advertiser cannot change or rank a response. You are buying a place next to the conversation, not inside it.

Checked against OpenAI’s help centre and UK launch reporting, October 2026. The platform is in beta and changes most months, so we re-check every detail before a launch.

What ChatGPT ads cost

There is no minimum spend in the self-serve Ads Manager, and OpenAI has not published UK cost benchmarks. Early prices quoted in the trade press are US figures from a market that has moved every month since February, so we do not plan budgets on them.

What we plan on instead is a fixed test: a budget you would be comfortable losing, run for 4 to 6 weeks against one conversion that matters, with a stop rule agreed before launch. The real cost of ChatGPT ads is cost per qualified lead or sale, and you only learn that from your own account.

Set up tracking before you spend

This is where most early accounts go wrong, and it is the same mistake we see in Google Ads every week: the platform is told to optimise for the wrong thing. Google Ads leads not converting covers the pattern in full.

  1. Define the conversion that matters. A qualified enquiry, a booked call, a sale or a completed application. Not a page view.
  2. Install the pixel and the Conversions API together. Browser tracking alone loses events to consent banners and blockers. Server-side events close the gap, and both send a shared event ID so nothing is counted twice.
  3. Tag every ad URL. UTM parameters on every link, so ChatGPT traffic is visible in GA4 and your CRM, not just in Ads Manager.
  4. Match leads to outcomes. Compare what the platform reports with what your CRM shows a month later. If the numbers disagree, read why GA4 and ad platform conversions don’t match.
  5. Choose the attribution window on purpose. Click and view windows are adjustable. Short windows understate a considered purchase; long ones flatter the channel. Pick one and keep it for the whole test.

How we run ChatGPT ads

Every step is fixed scope, and you can stop after any of them.

  1. Fit check. Do your buyers ask ChatGPT the questions that lead to you, and is your topic allowed? If not, we say so and you keep the budget.
  2. Measurement build. Pixel, Conversions API, UTMs, CRM matching and a reporting view that shows cost per qualified outcome.
  3. Language and creative. Context hints and ad copy written from the words your customers actually use, taken from search terms, enquiries and call notes.
  4. The test. A fixed budget and window, a single conversion goal and a stop rule agreed in advance.
  5. The decision. Scale, change or stop, made on qualified outcomes against your other channels. Every campaign change waits for your approval.

A cheap click that never becomes a customer is not a cheap click. We judge ChatGPT ads the way we judge every channel: by what reaches the bottom of the funnel.

ChatGPT ads or being recommended in the answer?

They are different positions on the same screen. An ad sits under the answer and stops when the budget stops. Being named inside the answer is earned, and it compounds. Most businesses need the second before the first is worth paying for.

If ChatGPT does not mention you when buyers ask about your category, start with how to get cited by AI assistants or an AI visibility audit.

Is ChatGPT advertising right for your business?

  • Likely yes: buyers research your category in ChatGPT before they decide, your conversion tracking already works on another channel, and you can judge a test on qualified outcomes within 6 weeks.
  • Not yet: you cannot see which channel your leads came from today, your category sits in an excluded topic, or your site loses the visitors your current ads already send. Fix that first; website traffic but no enquiries is the place to start.

Frequently asked questions

Are ChatGPT ads available in the UK?

Yes. Ads began showing to UK users in June 2026, and UK businesses can buy them through OpenAI’s self-serve Ads Manager, which is still in beta.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

There is no minimum spend, and OpenAI has not published UK benchmarks. You can buy on cost per thousand impressions, cost per click or optimised bidding. The cost worth measuring is cost per qualified lead or sale, which only a properly tracked test will show you.

Who sees ads in ChatGPT?

Logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts see no ads, and OpenAI does not show ads to accounts it identifies as under 18.

Do ChatGPT ads change the answers?

No. OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers. Ads appear below a response, labelled as sponsored, and advertisers cannot change or rank what the answer says.

How do you track conversions from ChatGPT ads?

With OpenAI’s pixel on your site and its Conversions API sending server-side events, sharing an event ID so nothing is counted twice. Add UTM tags to every ad link and match leads to outcomes in your CRM, so you judge the channel on results rather than on platform-reported clicks.

Should I pay for ChatGPT ads or work on being cited instead?

Usually both, in that order. Being named inside the answer reaches every ChatGPT user, including paid plans, and keeps working without spend. Ads add a paid position below the answer and are worth testing once your tracking and your organic visibility are in place.
