Employer brand : AI visibility

How your employer brand shows up in AI search.

Candidates no longer open ten tabs. They ask one assistant and read the answer as the truth. See how visible your employer brand is to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini, and how to fix the gaps.

AI assistant answerBased on available information, a few employers stand out for pay transparency and progression:

The shift
For twenty years candidate research meant Google, Glassdoor and your careers page. Now millions ask an AI assistant instead, and it replies in one paragraph. It names a few employers and skips the rest. You are in the answer, or you are invisible.
The five signals

Five things decide whether an assistant can see you.

They compound. Miss the first and nothing else matters, because the model never reaches you. Get all five right and you become the answer rather than the omission.

01

Access

Can the AI crawlers actually reach your careers content, or is your robots file quietly turning them away.

→ If they cannot reach you, you do not exist.
02

Structure

Is your content marked up so a machine understands what it is reading, not just a human.

→ Schema makes you legible, not approximate.
03

Knowledge graph

Does a clean, claimed entity for your organisation exist where the models look for facts.

→ A clear entity stops the model confusing you.
04

Citation

Is your employer story corroborated across the wider web, not just asserted on your own site.

→ Corroboration is what earns the citation.
05

Social

Do the surrounding social and third party signals tell a model your brand is real and current.

→ Consistent signals build the confidence to name you.

These are the five dimensions The SetpointHQ Index scores, ordered here by dependency rather than by weight. In the published rubric, citation likelihood carries the heaviest weighting at 35%, followed by schema at 20% and the remaining three at 15% each. Read the methodology →

Why this is not SEO

SEO was a game of ranking. AI visibility is a game of citation.

Under search optimisation, ten results shared a page and you fought for position three. Under AI, the model reads the web, decides who is worth naming, and writes one answer. Ranking ninth is invisible. Being named at all is the whole prize.

That changes what matters. A model cannot cite what it cannot reach, cannot understand content it cannot parse, and will not name a brand it has no corroborating evidence for. Visibility is earned across the five signals above at once, and most employers have never measured a single one of them.

The SetpointHQ Index

Most UK employer brands are rarely named in AI answers.

The SetpointHQ Index scores 100 UK employer brands across ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini against a published rubric. The median composite is 52.8, but citation is the weakest of the five dimensions at 26.9, and a quarter of the cohort publish no schema an assistant can read at all.

Questions

Common questions

Is employer brand AI visibility the same as SEO?
No. SEO is about ranking among ten links. AI visibility is about being named in one answer. A model cites a handful of brands and ignores the rest, so being present at all is what counts, not your position.
Which AI assistants should we care about?
The four candidates use most: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini. Visibility in one does not guarantee visibility in another, because they draw on different sources, which is why we measure all four.
Can we control how AI describes our employer brand?
You cannot dictate the wording, but you strongly influence it. Clean structured data, a claimed knowledge graph entity, accessible content and corroboration across the web all shape what a model can say about you.
How is AI visibility measured?
We probe each assistant with the kinds of questions candidates ask, then score how often your brand is cited and how prominently, alongside the technical signals that make citation possible. The SetpointHQ Index applies this to 100 UK employer brands.
We have a strong Glassdoor presence. Is that not enough?
Glassdoor is one source among many, and the assistants weigh far more than reviews. A strong profile helps, but it does not fix blocked crawlers, missing structured data or an absent knowledge graph entity.
We are a recruitment agency, not an employer. Does this apply to us?
The five signals are identical, and the technical work is the same. What changes is the buyer and the evidence a model needs. An employer is trying to be recommended to candidates, so the questions are about pay, culture and progression. An agency is trying to be recommended to clients, so the questions are about sector, region, volume and provable results. The agency version is covered separately.
