Marketing for recruitment agencies, built for how clients buy now.

Winning clients and winning candidates are 2 different jobs. Here is how UK agencies do both in 2026: AI search, SEO, LinkedIn, adverts, sourcing and business development.

Marketing for a recruitment agency is 2 jobs at once: winning clients who have roles to fill, and winning candidates who can fill them. Most agencies fund one properly and hope the other takes care of itself. This playbook covers both, channel by channel, for UK agencies in 2026.

It is written by a recruitment marketer, not a recruiter: 20 years on the marketing side of agencies and in-house teams. Everything here is what we would do first if we were running your marketing tomorrow.

You market to 2 audiences, and most agencies only fund one

Candidate spend is easy to justify because every advert has a vacancy attached. Client marketing gets whatever is left, usually a website that hasn’t changed in years and a LinkedIn page nobody posts on. The agencies that grow fastest reverse that imbalance deliberately.

Candidate marketing fills the roles you have. Client marketing decides whether you have any roles to fill next quarter.

Winning clients: AI search, SEO and LinkedIn

Get named when clients ask an AI assistant

A hiring manager who once searched “healthcare recruitment agency Bristol” now often asks ChatGPT or Perplexity for a shortlist, and reads the 3 names it gives back. If your agency isn’t one of them, you never make the comparison. We cover how assistants choose which agencies to name in recruitment agency AI visibility, and the 6 most common reasons an agency is missing in why your agency isn’t showing in ChatGPT.

Make your website findable, not just nice

Your job pages are usually your biggest SEO asset and your most neglected one. Sector pages that say something specific, job pages with proper structured data, and content a client would actually save all compound over time. The full detail is in SEO for recruitment agencies.

Use LinkedIn as a client channel, not a job board

Most agency LinkedIn activity is job posts, which clients scroll past. Consultants posting what they see in their market, with numbers, is what earns client attention. See LinkedIn for recruitment agencies.

Winning candidates: adverts, sourcing and nurture

Candidate marketing is where most agency budget already goes, so the gains come from quality, not more spend.

  • Adverts that sell the job. Most adverts are the client’s job description with a logo on. Lead with what the candidate gets, be specific about pay and location, and write a version for each channel. Studio’s Job Advert builds the master advert and its variants with an optimisation score.
  • Sourcing that doesn’t wait for applicants. The best candidates are rarely on the market. Boolean search strings written to each platform’s own syntax find them faster. See Boolean search strings for 6 platforms.
  • Nurture for the near-misses. The candidate who came second last month is the easiest placement next month. A short nurture sequence keeps them warm.
  • Speed. Replying to an applicant within hours rather than days changes who you place. No channel fixes a slow response.

Business development that runs on signals

The best client marketing is timely. A company advertising a role you could fill is the warmest lead you will ever get, because the need is public and current. Watching live hiring activity, researching the company before you call, and leading with a relevant candidate rather than a service pitch is covered in recruitment business development and how to market a candidate to clients.

What to measure

Recruitment agency marketing measures
MeasureWhy it mattersWhere it comes from
Cost per placement by channelShows which spend actually produces revenueJob board invoices against placements
Time to shortlistThe number clients judge you onYour CRM or ATS
Candidate response timeFast replies decide who you placeInbox and CRM timestamps
Client win rateWhether your client marketing worksNew clients against pitches made
AI and search visibilityWhether new clients can find you at allSearch Console, and asking the assistants

Start with the first 2. Most agencies can’t say which job board produces their placements, and that single number usually pays for the whole exercise.

Do it yourself, outsource it, or use tools

There are 3 realistic ways to resource all of this: hire someone, outsource to a recruitment marketing agency, or give your consultants tools that do the production work. Each has a place, and the cost difference is large. We compare them honestly in outsource or in-house recruitment marketing.

The tools route, in numbers

A recruiter’s loaded cost is roughly £28 an hour. Take 8 to 10 hours of adverts, strings, outreach and packs off each desk each week and that is £224 to £280 a week back in selling time. Studio is £149 a month per seat, so it pays for itself by the end of week 1.

Common questions

What is marketing for recruitment agencies?

It is the work of winning clients with roles to fill and candidates who can fill them. For clients that means AI visibility, SEO, LinkedIn and business development. For candidates it means adverts, sourcing, nurture and fast response.

How much should a recruitment agency spend on marketing?

There is no reliable single percentage. Start by measuring cost per placement by channel, move budget from what doesn’t produce placements to what does, and protect a share for client marketing, which most agencies underfund.

What marketing works best for recruitment agencies in 2026?

The biggest shift is AI search: clients and candidates increasingly ask ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity for a shortlist. Agencies that are named there, with strong job pages and consultants active on LinkedIn, have a clear advantage.

Should a recruitment agency outsource its marketing?

It depends on size and how much of the work is strategy versus production. Many small agencies get further by giving consultants tools for the production work and buying strategy in when needed.

How do recruitment agencies get more clients?

Watch live hiring signals, research the company before you call, and lead with a relevant candidate rather than a generic pitch. Supporting that with a site and LinkedIn presence that prove sector depth makes every call warmer.

Is SEO still worth it for recruitment agencies?

Yes, especially for job pages and sector pages. Search engines and AI assistants both rely on well-structured, specific pages, so the same work improves both.
